Boston University ACT requirements

What ACT scores is Boston University typically looking for? I've heard it's pretty competitive. Any info is greatly appreciated as I'm planning out my testing schedule for next year!

Boston University (BU) is a fairly selective institution with a competitive ACT profile. For the 2024-2025 application cycle, BU decided to revert back to requiring an ACT or SAT score from all applicants.

The middle 50% ACT range of admitted students tends to fluctuate slightly from year to year, based on the applicant pool. However, in recent years, the middle 50% ACT score was generally between 31 and 34. This means that 25% of admitted students scored below a 31, and 25% of admitted students scored above a 34.

Keep in mind, these score ranges only represent averages. There are certainly students who are accepted with scores below this range, and students who are denied admission with scores above this range. Regardless, scoring within or above this range can strengthen the academic component of your application.

To give yourself the best chance of achieving a competitive score, I suggest you start preparing for the ACT well in advance and schedule to take the exam more than once if possible. This provides you with the opportunity to superscore your ACT, meaning BU will consider the highest composite score from all the test dates.

Remember, while test scores are an important part of the application, they're not the only aspect BU looks at. They also consider your GPA, extracurricular activities, essays, and other components of the holistic review process. So, make sure to also focus on those elements as you prepare your application. Good luck with your preparations!
